How to Break Bad Habit: A Step-by-Step Guide!

Habits are in the news today because a lot of people right now are trying to break one or more bad habits. Based on the study, millions of people all around the world try to break at least one bad habit and yet only eight percent succeed at breaking that habit, boredom takes the energy to pay attention to the future goal. Why is that? One of the main reasons that people are being ingrained breaking a bad habit is that:

  • They do not understand what a habit really is.
  • They are not using the right system.
  • They are relying on the wrong things to try to break that habit.

Habit takes way with what most people have been told to, break a bad habit is behavior that controls, start positive or negative practice. People should form awareness of this action to avoid unhealthy routines and to eliminate unwanted habits. Be aware of negative friends, be social with positive friends to avoid negative practices.

What is the Way That You've Been Told to Break A Bad Habit?

Most of us have heard for many years that the way to break a bad habit is you have got to use this thing called willpower. To develop powerful support from your mind that triggers your mindfulness to stay motivated. If you have tried to use willpower to break one or more bad habits, what's one bad habit?

Break Bad Habit - What is the Way That You've Been Told to Break A Bad Habit?

These are all some of the bad habits that a lot of people try to break every year but unfortunately, they do not do it successfully. These are some of the common bad habits that we try to break and try to do that and try something else but whatever you have been trying to do, most people have been told to use willpower. If you are procrastinating, buckle down and knuckle down and you can put your nose to the grindstone, come on you can do it and the gurus talk about the hustle and the grind. We have heard this, that is great, but it does not work. that does not work at all, why doesn't it work? There are several reasons, but one of the main reasons that process, and strategy does not work is that you're setting yourself up to fail, you're setting yourself up to fail because willpower is a very limited resource.

What Is Willpower?

Willpower is trying to get yourself to change using the power of your will, hence you're trying to force yourself to change your feelings. How is that working for you? Humans don't like to be told what to do even by ourselves, even if you're telling yourself you have to make this change, you don't want to listen to you just like you wouldn't want someone else telling you what to do.

What Is A Better Way to Do It?

What's a better way if you have a bad habit like procrastination or overeating or something that you have to do? You want to make sure that you are using this process, what is the process that we really want to use? Use a process called understanding what a habit really is. Plan your goal and quit the junk feelings, track, and address yourself mentally, crave for something pretty that will encourage you from quitting bad habits.

What Is A Habit?

This is something that I talk about all the time in my books like Power Habits®. Power Habits®, the new science for making success automatic. Habit is simply five stages:

1. Cue

- That is the trigger that happens in your environment, it is the trigger that happens in your day.

2. Routine

- What do you do when the cue is triggered?

3. Reward

- The reward that happens in the brain when you do this habit.

4. Craving

- You get a craving for things you get a craving for, continuing to do this habit.

5. Belief

- Your belief and most people believe.

What does that mean? It is too hard to change these habits, so why even bother? Do you visualize rewarding returns that encourage practicing and stick on the progress? That is what I mean by setting yourself up to fail. We don't want to do that idea anymore, instead we just want to do a simple three-step process.

Three-step Process

1. Understand the Cue

- What is the cue that's triggered when you do this bad habit, for example procrastination.

- You are thinking about doing that activity that you know is going to make a big difference for you.

- You think about calling that customer or that prospect.

- You think about doing that video or whatever it might be.

2. Have A Routine

- You go do something else, you procrastinate then do something else.

- If you just change your routine, you say wait a minute, what if I just do that thing maybe just take five minutes.

- Do something that is a little uncomfortable but maybe it's going to make a big difference for me.

The point is when you go to powerhabitschallenge.com, it is simple and yet it is stunningly effective, it is so effective because we are using what works. what does not work is willpower, it just does not work because willpower is a very limited resource because we can only do so much every single day. It is also known as decision fatigue. That is why people like Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg always wore the same outfit. You notice Mark Zuckerberg always wears the same thing, why? because you do not want to have to make so many decisions every single day. That is one example of the use of habits, the right use of willpower.  If you have a habit that you would like to break, if you have a habit that you would like to change, remember one thing you actually can't stop doing, all you can do is replace one habit with another instead of procrastination.

  • You replace it with doing something that scares you every day instead of smoking.
  • Do something like eat a healthy snack instead of overspending.
  • Do something like meditating or thanking god for the gifts of your life.

There are many ways that we can replace and cut a bad habit with a better, more empowering habit. Open your phone to a positive friend and positive habits that may help you reach your goals much faster and easier with a lot less effort. The idea is not easy, strategies may have issues, or it may slip to weeks, but the original plan should not leave. People learn a lot through curiosity, the moment we have learned about the benefit of having a positive mind, the process of being aware changes our behaviors. Cues may repeat itself, stress may happen, remember that the plan is to take control of the habits and ideas to have the capability to shake the cravings away.

Most people live a life of quiet desperation, that's a famous quote. Most people live lives of quiet desperation, why is that? There's a lot of reasons for that, one of the big reasons  is because people simply don't ask for what they want, they settle for less than they want. People should start a plan in order to step forward to their goal and live easy, focus their mind to the action and create change in our daily life.

I remember when I was growing up, In 1984. When I graduated high school, there was no internet. There were only two high paying jobs out there:

  • Doctor 
  • Lawyer 

Those are the two things that every mother wished that their kid would be when they grow up, to be a doctor or a lawyer. I remember growing up that I didn't want to be a doctor and I didn't want to be a lawyer, neither of those appealed to me. I wandered around for many years and I didn't know why I was here on earth.

I tried a lot of different jobs, I tried a lot of different things but nothing ever worked out. I was reading lots of self-help books and I just couldn't put the pieces together, at the age of 25 I decided to commit suicide because I didn't know why I was here on earth, that’s the last moment my life was spared. Focus on the progress of your goals, it may be difficult but you'll achieve it at the right time.

I went on a long journey of self-discovery, finding my purpose on the earth. In April 1997, I discovered Afformations®, my Afformations® method of which I've written several books. I was very  fortunate to discover my purpose on earth but I still didn't know how to make money at it, how to have a business set even though I finally know why I'm here on earth.  

  • How do I make money?
  • How do I help people?

How Can You Set Yourself Up To Succeed?

Set your mind with personal realistic goals to achieve, start planning the future with a positive list. How can you set yourself up? How can you live the life that you really want?

1.  Find Your Purpose Here On Earth

Find our purpose, that sounds easy to say doesn't it? it's really hard, it certainly was. when you start to find your purpose, it seems really difficult to unlock the potential you have. In my books like power habits, I do have a process for that which I call find your because.

  • What is your because?
  • What is your reason why?
  • What is your why?

What happens is that, if you don't know your purpose, if you don't know what you're really passionate about, and what keeps you going. It's going to be very easy to quit and give up when things get tough and when do things get tough all the time. Practice a habit to reflect on the goals you set to achieve a positive performance you attain.

Things don't turn out the way we thought or hoped it happens all the time, it happens to everybody no matter who you are and no matter what stage of life. Things don't always turn out the way you want, what's going to keep you going? Why do most people quit before they reach their goals? You've got to find your purpose here on earth, challenge yourself to have a healthy thinking to achieve your potential.

The analogy that I always like to give is, if you go from your home to the grocery store:

  • You either walk
  • Take a bicycle
  • Drive a car
  • Take an uber
  • Take the bus

It doesn't matter how you get there, but you're going on a trip. You're going from where you are to where you want to be, you have a reason to get to go there. You don't go to the grocery store and walk around, look at the shells and go without a purpose. You have a purpose right even if it's just to get milk, egg, and bread, that's why you're there at the grocery store. You just go look around and go and that was fun and then go home, nobody would do that  but there's a lot of people doing that in their lives. People have different pathways to live, that makes us accountable for our decisions in life.

2. What Is Your Destination?

Where do you want to go? Did you evaluate the pathway you're planning to achieve? some examples that i hear:

  • I really want to get to 30k a month in my business especially right now with everything going on.
  • I want to get to 30k a month.
  • I want to do it without all these complicated funnels and without spending a lot of money on ads.
  • I don't really have a big list right now, can you help me get to 30k a month.

You can do that, the resources and strategies are all attainable to achieve your dream career. That's just one example of what you can do, reflect on this questions:

  • What is your because? 
  • Where do you want to get to?
  • What is going to keep you going?
  • In the tough times what is the thing that's going to keep you going?

It's got to be more than money, in my experience of over 20 years of helping my clients earn over 2.7 billion, ironically money isn't a good enough motivation for most people. For some people money can be their greatest motivation in creating their future career, some people are very focused on money. I've never been that way personally, I'm not driven by money. I'm certainly not suggesting that money is not important, money is important and powerful in terms of creating your future success.

I grew up poor in a rich neighborhood, I know better than most people how bad it is to not have money. Most people mathematically aren't making the money they want to be making here on earth and why is that? The idea of achieving money can bring happiness to people but it's hard for them to achieve, there's a lot of reasons why:

  • They don't have the right plan.
  • They don't have the right tools. 
  • They don't have the right support for them to actually reach their goals.

What is it that's more than money that's going to keep you going through those tough times? You usually find in my conversations with thousands of entrepreneurs over the last two decades, I've seen few people come to me and say you know what i really want to make a lot of money because money is the most important thing to me. It is smart for people to think about creating money, however when the challenging part of the progress on achieving your goals becomes difficult the behavior and mindset change.

3. Take Action

Rate yourself on a scale from one to ten, how stuck or abundant do you feel in time, energy in relationships and in money? Are your objectives on the last for lifetime? IN other words,

  • Do you have the time that you want? 
  • Do you have the energy that you want?
  • Do you have relationships you want?
  • Do you have the money that you want? 

If your answer is no to any of those then you need to take action, whatever it is. Decisions are always present in our daily life, from setting goals and day to day actions. People just need to learn what achievement they want to achieve in the future, whether it's to.

  • Read books
  • Get coaching 
  • Go back to school
  • Watch YouTube videos 

If you think that the key about the billions and trillions of youtube videos that are out there, you’ll know that all the information of the human race is here on youtube, the question is why isn't everyone a professional? it's because what's missing with videos is the insight, you're not really getting the insight that's why most people need the support, the personal step-by-step, honest guidance from somebody who's been there and then can show you the way. You can do it on your own if you want, you can get some help if it's easier for you to get some help that way. You can create a strategic compress time, rather than taking so long trying to figure it out for yourself.

Personal Goal Setting - Take Action

It took me over 10 years to figure this out trying to do it all by myself, it wasn't until I hired my first business coach back in 2007. That's what really changed everything for me, maybe it will for you too. That's really how you can set yourself up for success and how you can really get more of what you want over the next 12 months without having to settle for less than you

desire. Psychology says that we settle on the things we are comfortable with, however, people don't need to feel short in terms of success and achievement. People have the decision to change our imagination and focus on the goals we set to have psychological satisfaction.

One more bonus tip, look at what you're settling for:

  • Are you settling for not having the time that you want 
  • Not having the energy that you want 
  • Not having the relationships that you want
  • Not having the money that you want

If you're settling for less than you desire, then you have to take the action you can't just start talking about it like most people do. Make sure you're not one of those people, don't be that person that talks incessantly, instead be an action taker and let your actions do the talking.

That is really what's going to make the difference for you over the next 90 days, 6 months, 12 months, the next 5 years and 10 years for you and your loved ones and your legacy.

The point is, people should have the strategy to achieve the task they set to measure the performance needed on achieving the goal. Despite the difficult process in creating a pathway to achieve your dreams, the goals you set will soon create a change and impact the world. The progress may take small steps but the success will be based on the right decisions you learn throughout the entire process of achieving your goals.

1. Identifying Your Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow

Let me ask you this question, Would you get in your car, drive around in circles and then come back home without going anywhere? No one would ever do that and yet you know what people are doing with their lives. They're just driving around in circles, they say I don't really know where I want to go. In order to attain realistic and successful direction, people are required to set lifetime goals and effort to manifest a positive result.

An individual measures things based on the ability to control what's ahead. The problem is, people don't measure the process of planning to have an effective career. People should focus on the relevant impact of learning from experience and practice a habit to pursue a career with a positive impact.

  • If you don't have a destination
  • If you don't know where you're going 
  • If you don’t know why you want to get there 
Goal Setting - The 3 Sneaky Steps to Set Yourself Up For Success

It's really hard to get there isn't it? it's hard to know, it's hard to get where you're going if you don't know where you're going. Pay attention and reflect about your goal objectives, create a smart plan to achieve satisfaction. Failure doesn't mean that your goals aren't achievable, failure helps you to gain potential solutions to create strategy.

Identify your pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, everybody wants more time, more energy, better relationships, more money, but what does that really look like to you? What's motivating you to stick on your goals and achieve that success? 

  • some people want a Lexus
  • some want a tesla 
  • some want a big house in the mountains
  • some want a condo on the beach

What do you plan to achieve? Set your goal as a motivation to create your future with a positive outcome. It doesn't matter what goals you want to achieve in life, but you've got to identify what it is.

2. Identify Where You Are Right Now

Where are you right now in relation to where you want to be? Where did your decisions brought you now? Did that decision save you from potential damage? or did it provide you with the ability to identify your CPR.

CPR stands for your current perceived reality

  • Where you are, who you think you are and you are where you think you are, and you have the limitations that you think you have right now. Are you thinking of being successful in life and gaining control on the life you want to achieve?

The thing is, you have a lot of time and the ability to attain that goal but you're not taking steps to start in the first place. I call that getting rid of your head trash but first you have to identify what your head trash is.

What is Head Trash?

  • Head trash is a bad weight that's holding you back to start your goals.
  • Head trash is the voice in your head that leads to potential bad outcomes.

Examples of Head Trash

  • I want to make more money, but I don't think I can do it right.
  • I want to double my income like your clients do, but I'm not even gonna try.
  • I want to get to 30k per month in my online business like your clients do, but I can’t.
Goal Setting - What is Head Trash?

Where are you right now in relation to where you want to be? Are you pursuing the goals you set? Are you trying to improve your writing skills? What are the strategies you have to approach those goals you set? You might say one from this list:

  • I want to have my own business
  • I want to write books like you do
  • I want to have online courses like you have
  • I want to coach people like you do

But you don't know where to start, that's the number one thing that people say to me when they hire me and when they work with me in my group coaching 30k income secrets or one-on-one in my elite inner circle. You can start to do that right now, confidence with a proper behavior will help to pursue and attain ambitious dreams.

3. Understand the Gap

What's the gap between where you are and where you want to be your pot of gold at the end of the rainbow? what's the strategies that you pay attention to? Did it result in positive and effective terms? If there wasn't a gap then you'd already be there and if you're not there, meaning there has to be a gap. That just makes logical sense doesn't it?

Three Kinds of Gaps

1. Knowledge Gap

  • This means, I don't know how to get there.
  • I don't know what to do to reach my pot of gold.

2. Skills Gap

  • This means, I don't know how to do it.
  • I don't have the right tools.
  • Maybe I know what to do but i don't really know how to do it.

3. Belief Gap

  • This means you don't have the right support .
  • You need to have the right support from the right coach, the right mentor so that someone believes in you before you even believe in yourself see.

Achieving goals are becoming difficult from day to day, people feel short and as a result, people forget the goals they set. According to psychology, people need a break too and failure to do so may lead to negative mental health and behavior. Focus on creating a positive mindset to create a successful career. The number one thing that I see holding people back from the goal is:

  • They don't think they can do it
  • They don't believe that they can really do the things that they want to do 
  • If you don't believe you can do it well, you won't do it right because you just said you won't believe it.

An attainment of an individual doesn't define how short you are, understanding the suggested values and feedback from successful people may create an easier guide to accomplish the challenging part of achieving the goals you set. People should be oriented on which types of abilities needed to be approached by the individual to attain the efficacy of the set goal. 

You have to take action, that's actually the fourth step, the bonus step. You have to start to take action to overcome the gaps, learn to take action based on the experiences you have.  Here's the thing, remember that you can't just believe it to achieve it, you have to take action.

Do you know what a vision board is? Have you ever tried to create your own, maybe for a school project or for a material to be used in the office? And maybe it didn't work out the way you wanted?

In today's Ask Noah St. John Show, I'm going to teach you why everyone's wrong about vision boards and how to do a better vision board for you, for your family, for your business, your career, and your legacy.

What are vision boards? And how do I create one?

What is a vision board? As we all know, a vision board is an art piece of motivation that the gurus have been telling us to do for years and years. A vision board is something where you think about your journey, what you want to focus on, your deepest desires, and the achievements you want to fulfill in the future. It is designed to represent your visions.

There's a broad concept when it comes to the designs of a vision board. The very common tools are paper and pen where you just write down quotes from your favorite books, stories you have read, or films. People often use words of affirmations that aim to grow positivity within. Perhaps, you can use my words of Afformation® which reinforce your confidence by simply answering empowering questions about the things you are capable of achieving. 

Others use magazines to pick and cut fun pictures, gluing those to paper, and sticking them on the wall. Some use photos they have taken to remind them of memories. Most students make vision boards using different materials and resources which resembles their school projects having various themes, colors, and textures. Anything that appeals visually great can attract positive vibes and inspire a person to keep moving and hustling for a dream.

Why is your vision board not enough?

Well, vision boards are supposed to help you get all the things that you want. Makes perfect sense, doesn't it?

I remember years and years ago when I started to educate myself through spiritual studies. I read all these books and talked a lot about vision boards. I said, “I'll try it”. I got all these magazines out, I cut all these images of cars and houses of money and I put them on my wall. I think about it and I'd stare at my vision board, look at it and think about it. My eyes are glued to these pictures hoping I will be able to experience success.

Empowering Vision: Why is your vision board not enough?

Do you know what I got while I was looking at the picture? Do you know if the pictures of cars, houses, and money become true now? Why didn't the vision board work for me? A reason the vision board didn't work for me and it didn't work for millions of people out there who have tried vision boards is that a vision board doesn't fix the actual problem. It doesn't guarantee automatic success.

Basically, like going to the dentist you say, “Hey Doc, do you know I got a toothache? My tooth really hurts.” He goes, “Hey, you've got a cavity there.” Okay, next. You’re like, “Wait a minute. Don't you want to fix it well?” He says, “Well you didn't ask me to fix you just asked me to tell you what was wrong”. See, that's the real problem. Here’s the point, when you look at a vision board, cutting out pictures and all that texts, and you're visualizing the pictures on a wall, all you're basically doing to your brain is saying; “See. Look at all that stuff.” Your brain's going well.

What are we going to do now to see your brain? It’s a question seeking an answer, “finding machine” - that's what it is. Your brain is always in the process of asking and seeking answers to questions. This is one of the reasons why I invented the Afformation® System. If you look at my books like Power Habits® and Get Rid of Your Head Trash About Money, in the book of Afformations® from Hay House, and my Afformation® system at afformations.com, this is exactly what I’ve been teaching my coaching clients for more than two decades since 1997. It's also one of the reasons that my clients and I have added over 2.7 billion dollars using my legendary methods. 

While you're doing a vision board wrong, it's not your fault. It's just that they told you to put all these ideas and pictures together but then, they didn't tell you what to do. You became "blind" and too much focus on dreaming, you definitely lack a bit of moving.

Power Tip #1: Asking yourself what do you want

What works way better and more efficiently than a vision board is?

Asking yourself the things you want now, goals, or dreams you want to achieve.

You can write specific objectives for a short-term project you want to finish or an outline of goals to check development in achieving a long-term one. You can still draw them out and creating a vision board would be nice, too.

The things you value and believe in can definitely help to identify what's more essential to include in your list. You don't need to rush and frustrate yourself to envision mind-blowing ideas, or to visualize a clearer future right away. If you still don't know where to settle because maybe you're focusing on the present, asking yourself now can be truly helpful. This will serve as a key guide in your journey of understanding your feelings, learning your experiences, and knowing your purpose in life.

Power Tip #2: Understand what's between you and what you want

I call that going from your CPR to your NDR - your Current Perceived Reality to your New Desired Reality. Yes, it is important to know where you want but you gotta understand and relate what's between you and what you want. I call it "the gap.”

There are three kinds of gaps that you can have. You can have a knowledge gap, a skills gap, and a belief gap. A knowledge gap is “I don't know what to do”, the skills gap is “I don't know how to get there”, and the belief gap is “I don't really think I can do it now”.

From 99 of the coaching clients that I've coached over the last two decades, it's the belief gap that's keeping you stuck meaning most people just think or believe they probably can't do it anyway. What's the point now that maybe it is a conscious thought, may not be it, or maybe a subconscious thought but it doesn't matter because of the law of sowing and reaping. As you sow, so shall you reap.

Empowering Vision: Understand what's between you and what you want

If you think you can't do it then guess what, you're going to prove yourself right. Your emotions define the core of this life mission, how inspired and motivated you are to take risks and grab opportunities, and how you acknowledge the negative feeling and turn it into a challenge. You should want it more than you're afraid of it. Believe me when I say it helps you feel powerful when someone explains your gap, whether it is closer to your dreams or there's still a long track to go through.

Power Tip#3: Take the steps

Take the actions necessary to overcome your gap. Being committed to a goal is allocating time regularly, setting aside insecurities, and having the courage to push through no matter how difficult it is to get there. A visual board should not end with the image or text on the wall, it should empower you with a daily step to take and gain lessons through trials so it can add up to your growth.

That's why I have so many different programs that help you to overcome whatever gap it is whether it's a knowledge gap if you don't know what to do, a skills gap meaning you don't have the tools to do it, or much more important and the foundation of all is a belief gap. I have programs and tools that will help you believe and actually know that you can do it but believe it or not, belief isn't as important as you think even though it's crucial. It's much more important to take action than just try to sit there and change your beliefs. The Law of Attraction is not a bad thing to believe in but you need to work on your goals to make it happen.

Remember that I've said this many times and you've heard me say this if you've been on these programs, “One positive action beats a thousand positive thoughts.” I’d rather see you taking action without even believing it rather than sitting there trying to believe, and waiting until you're ready to take action because guess what you're never gonna be ready. It really takes time to be confident and speak positively about the abilities you possess. This only speaks a lot about the trust you put in the process no matter how blurry your view is on reaching your goal.

Empowering Vision: Take the steps

I can give you a thousand examples from my own life of how I took action even when I didn't think I could do it. A great example is my Hay House book. I started reading Hay House books in the 1990s when I started my spiritual studies more than 30 years ago and I dreamed of being a Hay House author. I kept saying, “It'll never happen to me. I'm probably not good enough. Who's going to listen to me? Why would they ever publish my book?” Well lo and behold, they published my book and now there's so much demand for it that they're sold out. When you go to Amazon and look at my Book of Afformations®, they're actually sold out which is pretty funny.

I wish that I had this all, all those years ago when I started successclinic.com in a dorm room with 800 in a book on HTML.
